God’s Covenant with His Messengers

The Lord of the universe hath never raised up a prophet nor hath He sent down a Book unless He hath established His covenant with all men, calling for their acceptance of the next Revelation and of the next Book; inasmuch as the outpourings of His bounty are ceaseless and without limit. – Selections from the Writings of the Báb, 87

The supreme cause for creating the world and all that is therein is for man to know God. In this Day whosoever is guided by the fragrance of the raiment of His mercy to gain admittance into the pristine Abode, which is the station of recognizing the Source of divine commandments and the Dayspring of His Revelation, hath everlasting attained unto all good. Having reached this lofty station a two-fold obligation resteth upon every soul. One is to be steadfast in the Cause with such steadfastness that were all the peoples of the world to attempt to prevent him from turning to the Source of Revelation, they would be powerless to do so. The other is observance of the divine ordinances which have streamed forth from the wellspring of His heavenly-propelled Pen. For man’s knowledge of God cannot develop fully and adequately save by observing whatsoever hath been ordained by Him and is set forth in His heavenly Book. – Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, 268

Covenant with Krishna

From time to time whenever there occurs a downfall of religion, O Bharat (Arjuna), and the rise of irreligion, it is then that I send forth My Spirit. For the protection of those who achieve Me, for the destruction of the wicked-doers, and for firmly establishing the Religion, manifest I Myself from age to Age. – Gita 4:7-8

From time to time, whenever Religion is decreased, and the unholy, the irreligious, the haughty people increase, the Lord adopteth a body different from time to time, removeth, through His infinite bounties, the calamities of the good people, destroyeth the unholy, establisheth Holiness and protecteth the Chain (Bridge) of His own sacred knowledge and diffuseth His immaculate Glory in the world. – Tulsi Raymayan Bal-Kand, 1 Sopan 129, cited in The Eternal Covenant, Lowell Johnson, p 237

Covenant with Buddha

I am not the first Buddha Who came upon this earth, nor shall I be the last. In due time another Buddha will arise in the world, a Holy One, a supremely enlightened One, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe, an incomparable Leader of men, a Master of angels and mortals. He will reveal to you the same eternal truths which I have taught you. He will preach to you His religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at the climax and glorious at the goal, in the spirit and in the letter. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and pure, such as I now proclaim. His disciples will number many thousands, while Mine number many hundreds. … He will be known as Maitreya, which means He Whose name is kindness. – Buddha and Matreya Amitabha, S. Fozdar, cited in The Eternal Covenant, Lowell Johnson, p 239

Covenant with Zoroaster

When Persia and the other countries are overtaken by the Arabs, I will choose one from the generation of the Kings of Persia, so that He will call the people of the world from East to West to worship one God. – Cited in The Eternal Covenant, Lowell Johnson, p 241

Covenant with Abraham

… behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. – Genesis 17: 1-8

Covenant with Moses

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord Thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: and all these blessing shall come on thee….

But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come unto thee, and overtake thee: … And the Lord shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone. – Deuteronomy 28:1-2, 15, 64

The Lord thy god will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall harken; … I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. – Deuteronomy 18:15, 18

Covenant with Jesus

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? – John 5:45-7

If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. … But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:… – John 14:15, John 15:26

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever e shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you. – John 16:12-14

Covenant with Muhammad

Say ye: ‘We believe in God, and that which hath been sent down to us, and that which hath been sent down to Abraham and Ismael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes: and that which hath been given to Moses and to Jesus, and that which was given to the prophets from their Lord. No difference do we make between any of them: and to God are we resigned.’ – Qur’an 2:130

And remember when Jesus the son of Mary said, ‘O children of Israel! Of a truth I am God’s apostle to you to confirm the law which was given before me, and to announce an apostle that shall come after me whose name shall be Ahmad!’ But when he (Ahmad) presented himself with clear proofs of his mission, they said, ‘This is manifest sorcery!’ – Qur’an 61:6

And there shall be a blast on the trumpet, and all who are in the Heavens and all who are in the Earth shall expire, save those whom God shall vouchsafe to live. Then shall there be another blast on it, and lo! arising they shall gaze around them: and the earth shall shine with the light of her Lord, and the Book shall be set, and the prophets shall be brought up, … – Qur’an 39:68-69

[1] Bahá’u’lláh refers to the two blasts on the trumpet as being the Message of the Báb and His own Message. See Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, 43-4
