We note that, as learning accelerates, the friends grow more capable of overcoming setbacks, whether small or large—diagnosing their root causes, exploring the underlying principles, bringing to bear relevant experience, identifying remedial steps, and assessing progress, until the process of growth has been fully reinvigorated. (Universal House of Justice, to the Conference of the Continental Boards of Counselors, 29 December 2015)
I always LOVE learning practical steps I can take in times of need, and this quote is one I want to have handy all the time. Embedded in it are 5 steps I can take whenever life throws me a curve ball:
- diagnose the root cause
- explore the underlying principles
- bring in relevant experience
- identify remedial steps
- assess progress
The wonderful thing about having something concrete to do, is that I often become paralyzed when obstacles are put in my path, or think I have to figure everything out myself, which feels more like paddling upstream. I might think the roadblocks means it’s not God’s will or it’s not the right time, so I procrastinate or give up my goals entirely.
The House of Justice has given this quote to the Counselors, to guide us towards achieving the goals of the plan, but I think it can be used for anytime I’m faced with a hurdle to get over.
Knowing what to do when life puts obstacles in my path, I am grateful!
What jumped out for you as you read through today’s meditation? I’d love it if you would share so we can all expand our knowledge of the Writings!
If you liked this meditation, you might also like my book Fear into Faith: Overcoming Anxiety
I also use this advice in my work as an environmental project manager and it has been very, very useful!
I agree, these steps could be used on many occasions, and could also be used alongside the Dynamics of Prayer for Solving Problems which can be found easily near the back of the little white prayer book. They are o course in other places in the Writings as well. The steps here fit also with the guidance we are given to plan, act and reflect on our individual and community plans as well as any administration work we do. And as said already, all these steps can be used in the work of our Faith, our jobs, or personal life.
Thanks for mentioning the 5 Steps for Solving Problems, Marian! I LOVE these and use them all the time in my work. For those who don’t have access to the white prayer book, you can find the 5 steps here.
Thanks for this Sebastien! I LOVE hearing stories of how other people integrate the Writings into their lives.
Love it! Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is good for LSA and group consultations too.
Absolutely right, Kaasay!
I remember this words of Baha’u’llah; “Be not content with the ease of a passing day, and deprive not thyself of everlasting rest. . . .” the Hidden Words 39 Persian part. it is true, the obstacles everyday in my life have been causing me to recognize more of my inner sight although outwardly being blind since long time ago.
Thank you, God, for obstacles! They truly are the cause of our spiritual growth!
