Welcome to the Month of Glory 173

Dear Friends!

Triumph!  6 months after breaking my ankle really badly in 3 places, and after the careful and deliberate ministrations of Dr. Omid Rahmanian, a chiropractor in Alaska and reader of this newsletter, who (over the phone) diagnosed the reason for my lack of progress, prescribed the remedy, served as my very own Baha’i-Inspired life coach, and gave me hope of recovery, I now have my car back, am able to drive for up to half an hour on hilly, treacherous, snow covered roads and walk up to 45 minutes on one of my favourite hikes; and this morning I walked for 90 minutes, doing errands downtown.  I finally feel like I’ve got my life back, and rehab isn’t the focus, and I am grateful!

Thank you all for your kind prayers.  They worked!

Ya Baha’u’l-Abha!

Sometimes Our Illnesses Serve A Higher Purpose We Can’t See

There are many stories of Lua Getsinger. This one was told me by Grace Ober, who heard it from Lua herself. It happened on one of Lua’s several visits to Acca and Haifa when she and ‘Abdu’l-Baha were walking together on the beach. Lua dropped behind slightly and began fitting her small feet, into His much larger foot prints.

After a few moments the Master turned to ask what she was doing. “I am following in your footsteps,” said Lua. He, turned away and they walked on. A few moments later, He turned again, “Do you wish to follow in my foot steps?” He asked. “Oh, yes,” said Lua.

They walked on – and ‘Abdu’l-Baha turned again, “Lua! Do you wish to follow in my foot steps?” His tone was louder and stern. “Oh, yes,” said Lua again.

Then, the third time he stopped and faced her. “Lua!” it was almost a shout, “Do you wish to follow in My foot steps?” “Oh, yes!” said Lua for the third time – and with that, a great tarantula jumped out from a hillock of sand and bit her ankle.

‘Abdu’l-Baha saw this and paid no attention, turning away and again walking. Lua followed, still fitting her footsteps into His. Her ankle swelled, the pain became excruciating, till, finally, she sank down with the agony of it. Then ‘Abdu’l-Baha picked her up and carried her to the ladies quarters, where the Greatest Holy Leaf put her to bed.

The agony increased. Lua’s temperature flamed; delirium set in. Finally, the Greatest Holy Leaf could stand it no longer and she implored ‘Abdu’l-Baha to heal her. He examined her carefully then laid His hands gently on her forehead. The temperature drained away, her head cleared she was healed. And it was only later that it was explained to her that she had been suffering from a strange and virulent condition of her blood which the bite of the tarantula had cured.  (Reginald Grant Barrow, Mother’s Stories: Stories of ‘Abdu’l-Baha and Early Believers told by Muriel Ives Barrow Newhall to her son, p. 41-42)

Healing of Ailments

Here is how ‘Abdu’l-Baha introduces this month’s newly translated prayer:

Thou hast written concerning the Tablet of Baka Ya Ali—Baka Ya Vafi (Tablet of Protection). This Tablet is for the healing of ailments. Whenever one is anxious about the recovery of an ill one, he may read this prayer with a melodious voice while in a state of the utmost attention and concentration.  (‘Abdu’l-Baha, Tablets of ‘Abdu’l-Baha v2, p. 469)

“In His Name, the Exalted, the All-Highest, the Most Sublime! Glorified art Thou, O Lord my God! O Thou Who art my God, and my Master, and my Lord, and my Support, and my Hope, and my Refuge, and my Light. I ask of Thee, by Thine Hidden and Treasured Name, that none knoweth save Thine own Self, to protect the bearer of this Tablet from every calamity and pestilence, and from every wicked man and woman; from the evil of the evil-doers, and from the scheming of the unbelievers. Preserve him, moreover, O my God, from every pain and vexation, O Thou Who holdest in Thy hand the empire of all things. Thou, truly, art powerful over all things. Thou doest as Thou willest, and ordainest as Thou pleasest.

O Thou King of Kings! O Thou kind Lord! O Thou Source of ancient bounty, of grace, of generosity and bestowal! O Thou Healer of sicknesses! O Thou Sufficer of needs! O Thou Light of Light! O Thou Light above all Lights! O Thou Revealer of every Manifestation! O Thou the Compassionate! O Thou the Merciful!

Do Thou have mercy upon the bearer of this Tablet, through Thy most great mercy and Thine abundant grace, O Thou the Gracious, Thou the Bounteous. Guard him, moreover, through Thy protection, from whatsoever his heart and mind may find repugnant. Of those endued with power, Thou, verily, art the most powerful. The Glory of God rest upon thee, O thou rising sun! Do thou testify unto that which God hath testified of His own Self, that there is none other God besides Him, the Almighty, the Best-Beloved.
(Bahá’u’lláh, from a recently translated tablet from Arabic at the Bahá’í World Centre)
