Shoghi Effendi, writing about the Kitab-i-Iqan, tells us it proclaims the existence of a personal God, who is unknowable, inaccessible, the source of all Revelation, eternal, omniscient, omnipresent and almighty.

Within a compass of two hundred pages it proclaims unequivocally the existence and oneness of a personal God, unknowable, inaccessible, the source of all Revelation, eternal, omniscient, omnipresent and almighty.  (Shoghi Effendi, God Passes By, p. 138)

He tells us that God transcends all of our human limitations and forms and is totally beyond our comprehension.  He’s ever-present, but to say that He is a personal reality does not mean that he has a physical form or in any way resembles a human being.  God is conscious of His creation, and has a will, a mind and a purpose for everything in existence.

What is meant by personal God is a God Who is conscious of His creation, Who has a Mind, a Will, a Purpose, and not, as many scientists and materialists believe, an unconscious and determined force operating in the universe. Such conception of the Divine Being, as the Supreme and ever present Reality in the world, is not anthropomorphic, for it transcends all human limitations and forms, and does by no means attempt to define the essence of Divinity which is obviously beyond any human comprehension. To say that God is a personal Reality does not mean that He has a physical form, or does in any way resemble a human being. To entertain such belief would be sheer blasphemy.  (Shoghi Effendi, Lights of Guidance, p. 477)

We’re like a painting who can never know the artist who created us.

He’s “personal” in that He created us; He loves us: He is always available to us; He wants us to “soar in His limitless space; and has given us the guidance on how to do it.

When we say He’s a personal God, we aren’t making Him human or anthropomorphising Him.  We’re just trying to fulfil our life’s purpose, which is to know Him.

He is God

We believe God just because He is God. I think we sometimes forget this but God understands so He reminds us at the beginning of many prayers he where He says:

  • He is God
  • O God, my God

I used to say the second one without thinking about it, but now I realize that what I am saying is: “O God, MY God”.  He’s mine!  I can count on Him!

God says “I am” not for what He’s going to do for us or to us but for what He does for us already.
